Histamine is a chemical that causes many signs and symptoms of allergy. Histamine is released from histamine-storing cells (mast cells) and attaches to other cells that have receptors for histamine on their surfaces. Histamine stimulates the cells to release chemicals that produce effects that we associate with allergy. Loratadine blocks one type of histamine receptor (the H1 receptor) and thus prevents activation of cells with H1 receptors by histamine. Unlike some antihistamines, loratadine does not enter the brain from the blood and, therefore, does not cause drowsiness when taken at recommended doses. The FDA approved loratadine in April 1993.

Loratadine is an antihistamine. It works by blocking a substance in the body called histamine. This helps to decrease allergy symptoms.

Before using Loratadine :
Some medical conditions may interact with Loratadine . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have kidney or liver problems
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Loratadine . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
• Amiodarone because the risk of severe irregular heartbeat may be increased
Ask your health care provider if Loratadine may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, fatigue, dry mouth, thirst, dry nose or hoarseness may occur. These effects should lessen as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: nervousness, rapid or pounding heartbeat, unusual weakness, stomach pain, dizziness, diarrhea, wheezing, increased physical activity. Loratadine does not usually cause drowsiness when used at recommended doses and under normal circumstances. However, be sure of the drug's effects before engaging in activities that require alertness such as driving or using machinery. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Important safety information:
• Taking Loratadine in high doses may cause drowsiness. Do NOT take more than the recommended dose without checking with your doctor.
• Loratadine may interfere with skin allergy tests. If you are scheduled for a skin test, talk to your doctor. You may need to stop taking Loratadine for a few days before the tests.
• Loratadine should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 6 years old without checking with the child's doctor; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Loratadine while you are pregnant. Loratadine is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Loratadine , check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Cetirizine hydrochloride

Cetirizine hydrochloride is an antihistamine. It is prescribed to treat the sneezing; itchy, runny nose; and itchy, red, watery eyes caused by seasonal allergies such as hay fever. Cetirizine hydrochloride also relieves the symptoms of year-round allergies due to dust, mold, and animal dander. This medication is also used in the treatment of chronic itchy skin and hives.

Take Cetirizine hydrochloride once a day, exactly as prescribed. This medication can be taken with or without food.
Cetirizine hydrochloride may make your mouth dry.

<img width='1' height='1' border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338874756498791362" />

type='text'>Reflexology : Part-03

Reflexology employs the principle that the reflex points on the feet, when hand pressure is applied, will reflexively stimulate energy to a related muscle or organ in the body and promote healing.

People with serious and long-term medical problems are urged to seek the advice of a physician. Diabetes patients in particular are urged to approach this therapy cautiously. Likewise pregnant women are cautioned emphatically to avoid reflexology during the early phases of pregnancy altogether, as accidentally induced labor and subsequent premature delivery can result from reflexology treatment.
A consultation with a reflexologist is recommended in order to determine the safety and appropriateness of reflexology therapy for a specific health problem or condition.

Side effects

Because reflexology is intended to normalize the body functions, the therapy does not cause a condition to worsen. Most patients find that pain diminishes over the course of the therapy. It has been noted, however, that some patients experience greater discomfort in the second session than in the first session, because a significant easing of pain and tension is generally associated with the initial therapy session. As a result, when pressure is reapplied to the tender points of the foot during the second session, the sensitivity has been heightened. This increase in sensitivity may cause minor additional discomfort for the patient.

Reflexology : Part-2

Description

Origins

Reflexology is a healing art of ancient origin. Although its origins are not well documented, there are reliefs on the walls of a Sixth Dynasty Egyptian tomb (c. 2450 B.C.) that depict two seated men receiving massage on their hands and feet. From Egypt, the practice may have entered the Western world during the conquests of the Roman Empire. The concepts of reflexology have also been traced to pre-dynastic China (possibly as early as 3000 B.C.) and to ancient Indian medicine. The Inca civilization may have subscribed to the theories of reflexology and passed on the practice of this treatment to the Native Americans in the territories that eventually entered the United States.
In recent times, Sir Henry Head first investigated the concepts underlying reflexology in England in the 1890s. Therapists in Germany and Russia were researching similar notions at approximately the same time, although with a different focus. Less than two decades later, a physician named William H. Fitzgerald presented a similar concept that he called zone analgesia or zone therapy. Fitzgerald's zone analgesia was a method of relieving pain through the application of pressure to specific locations throughout the entire body. Fitzgerald divided the body into 10 vertical zones, five on each side, that extended from the head to the fingertips and toes, and from front toback. Every aspect of the human body appears in one of these 10 zones, and each zone has a reflex area on the hands and feet. Fitzgerald and his colleague, Dr. Edwin Bowers, demonstrated that by applying pressure on one area of the body, they could anesthetize or reduce pain in a corresponding part. In 1917, Fitzgerald and Bowers published Relieving Pain at Home, an explanation of zone therapy.
Later, in the 1930s, a physical therapist, Eunice D. Ingham, explored the direction of the therapy and made the startling discovery that pressure points on the human foot were situated in a mirror image of the corresponding organs of the body with which the respective pressure points were associated. Ingham documented her findings, which formed the basis of reflexology, in Stories the Feet Can Tell, published in 1938. Although Ingham's work in reflexology was inaccurately described as zone therapy by some, there are differences between the two therapies of pressure analgesia. Among the more marked differences, reflexology defines a precise correlation between pressure points and afflicted areas of the body. Furthermore, Ingham divided each foot and hand into 12 respective pressure zones, in contrast to the 10 vertical divisions that encompass the entire body in Fitzgerald's zone therapy.
In 1968 two siblings, Dwight Byers and Eusebia Messenger, established the National Institute of Reflexology. By the early 1970s the institute had grown and was renamed the International Institute of Reflexology.
In a typical reflexology treatment, the therapist and patient have a preliminary discussion prior to therapy, to enable the therapist to focus more accurately on the patient's specific complaints and to determine the appropriate pressure points for treatment.
A reflexology session involves pressure treatment that is most commonly administered in foot therapy sessions of approximately 40-45 minutes in duration. The foot therapy may be followed by a brief 15-minute hand therapy session. No artificial devices or special equipment are associated with this therapy. The human hand is the primary tool used in reflexology. The therapist applies controlled pressure with the thumb and forefinger, generally working toward the heel of the foot or the outer palm of the hand. Most reflexologists apply pressure with their thumbs bent; however, some also use simple implements, such as the eraser end of a pencil. Reflexology therapy is not massage, and it is not a substitute for medical treatment.
Reflexology is a complex system that identifies and addresses the mass of 7,000 nerve endings that are contained in the foot. Additional reflexology addresses the nerves that are located in the hand. This is a completely natural therapy that affords relief without the use of drugs. The Reflexology Association of America (RAA) formally discourages the use of oils or other preparations in performing this hands-on therapy.
Preparations
In order to realize maximum benefit from a reflexology session, the therapist as well as the patient should be situated so as to afford optimal comfort for both. Patients in general receive treatment in a reclining position, with the therapist positioned as necessary—to work on the bare feet, or alternately on the bare hands.
A reflexology patient removes both shoes and socks in order to receive treatment. No other preparation is involved. No prescription drugs, creams, oils, or lotions are used on the skin.
Precautions
Reflexology is extremely safe. It may even be self-administered in a limited form whenever desired. The qualified reflexologist offers a clear and open disclaimer that reflexology does not constitute medical treatment in any form, nor is reflexology given as a substitute for medical advice or treatment. The ultimate purpose of the therapy is to promote wellness; fundamentally it is a form of preventive therapy.

Reflexology : Part-1

Definition
Reflexology is a therapeutic method of relieving pain by stimulating predefined pressure points on the feet and hands. This controlled pressure alleviates the source of the discomfort. In the absence of any particular malady or abnormality, reflexology may be as effective for promoting good health and for preventing illness as it may be for relieving symptoms of stress, injury, and illness.
Reflexologists work from maps of predefined pressure points that are located on the hands and feet. These pressure points are reputed to connect directly through the nervous system and affect the bodily organs and glands. The reflexologist manipulates the pressure points according to specific techniques of reflexology therapy. By means of this touching therapy, any part of the body that is the source of pain, illness, or potential debility can be strengthened through the application of pressure at the respective foot or hand location.
Purpose
Reflexology promotes healing by stimulating the nerves in the body and encouraging the flow of blood. In the process, reflexology not only quells the sensation of pain, but relieves the source of the pain as well.
Anecdotally, reflexologists claim success in the treatment of a variety of conditions and injuries. One condition is fibromyalgia. People with this disease are encouraged to undergo reflexology therapy to alleviate any of a number of chronic bowel syndromes associated with the condition. Frequent brief sessions of reflexology therapy are also recommended as an alternative to drug therapy for controlling the muscle pain associated with fibromyalgia and for relieving difficult breathing caused by tightness in the muscles of the patient's neck and throat.
Reflexology applied properly can alleviate allergy symptoms, as well as stress, back pain, and chronic fatigue. The techniques of reflexology can be performed conveniently on the hand in situations where a session on the feet is not practical, although the effectiveness of limited hand therapy is less pronounced than with the foot pressure therapy.

INFLUENZA AND INFLUENZA VACCINE

Influenza each year causes tremendous amounts of school absence among
older children and serious illness among preschool children. Symptoms during influenza may include headache, stomach ache, fever, vomiting, and cough, and complete recovery from them may take weeks or months. Influenza may also lead to pneumonia, ear infection , and other complications, and it may make a child more susceptible to illness long after the influenza itself seems to have disappeared. Influenza is particularly troublesome for those who have serious allergies or other chronic diseases.

Recommend influenza vaccine for children with a past history of repeated
pneumonia, asthma, or frequent ear infections. Any child who has diabetes, congenital heart disease, or chronic lung disease should have influenza vaccine. Others living in the same household with these high risk children should also receive influenza vaccine.
Children who are generally more healthy may be given influenza vaccine to reduce the
risk of illness and school absence during the flu season. Influenza vaccine may be
expected to decrease the likelihood of getting influenza, or make it less severe with complications less likely.

Reactions to influenza vaccine are generally mild, but some swelling and
soreness at the site of injection and mild fever and muscular pains may sometimes
occur. Those who have developed hives, swelling of the tongue, or other severe
reactions after eating eggs should not be given influenza vaccine.

Children 6 months through 8 years of age, if they have not had previous
influenza vaccine, are best protected with two doses of influenza vaccine given a month or more apart. Others receive a single dose. Influenza vaccine is not recommended under 6 months of age. It may be given at the same time as other immunizations.

Influenza vaccine should be scheduled in September, October, or November,
and the second dose, if recommended, should be given before December. Influenza
vaccine needs to be given each year, since protection does not last from flu shots or illness the previous years. Now a new alternative nasal influenza vaccine is available, known as FluMist. FluMist is currently available for children age 5 and older and adults under age 50 who do not have underlying chronic disease. Children and adults with chronic respiratory disease must still receive the traditional injectable influenza vaccine.

In addition to prevention, Influenza can be treated with a highly effective antiviral drug known as Tamiflu (oseltamivir). The earlier influenza is diagnosed the more effective Tamiflu is at relieving symptoms. If you think your child may have the flu have your child see your doctor early so they might benefit from this medication. Waiting in this case will render the drug less effective and the child will progress through a full course of the disease undeterred.

Acupressure

Acupressure is an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. When these points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body's life force to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses the gentle but firm pressure of hands (and even feet). There is a massive amount of scientific data that demonstrates why and how acupuncture is effective. But acupressure, the older of the two traditions, was neglected after the Chinese developed more technological methods for stimulating points with needles and electricity. Acupressure, however, continues to be the most effective method for self-treatment of tension-related ailments by using the power and sensitivity of the human hand.

Foremost among the advantages of acupressure's healing touch is that it is safe to do on yourself and others - even if you've never done it before - so long as you follow the instructions and pay attention to the cautions. There are no side effects from drugs, because there are no drugs. And the only equipment needed are your own two hands. You can practice acupressure therapy any time, anywhere.
Acupressure can be effective in helping relieve headaches, eyestrain, sinus problems, neck pain, backaches, arthritis, muscle aches, and tension due to stress. Also shown hundreds of acupressure students, patients, and friends how to use acupressure to relieve ulcer pain, menstrual cramps, lower back aches, constipation, and indigestion. You can also use self-acupressure to relieve anxiety and to help you get to sleep at night.

There are also great advantages to using acupressure as a way to balance the body and maintain good health. The healing touch of acupressure reduces tension, increases circulation, and enables the body to relax deeply. By relieving stress, acupressure strengthens resistance to disease and promotes wellness.
In acupressure, local symptoms are considered an expression of the condition of the body as a whole. A tension headache, for instance, may be rooted in the shoulder and neck area. Thus acupressure focuses on relieving pain and discomfort as well as on responding to tension before it develops into a "dis-ease" that is, before the constrictions and imbalances can do further damage. By using a combination of self-help methods such as trigger point stimulation, deep breathing, range-of-motion exercises, and relaxation techniques, you can improve your condition as well as feel more alive, healthy, and in harmony with your life.

The Psychology of Pain - Headaches

If you are one of the millions of people who suffer from chronic, painful headaches, you undoubtedly are well aware that headaches can generate feelings of frustration and despair and even cause depression. It's also known that anxiety and stress can trigger or aggravate certain types of chronic headaches, such as tension-type headaches.
Regardless of your headache type — migraine, tension, cluster, etc. — it's important for you to become a major player in your headache treatment. Fortunately, there are ways to help you manage headaches and the emotional upheaval that can accompany them. An integrated pain relief plan that includes medications, physical therapy and complementary therapies, such as biofeedback, massage and relaxation techniques, can provide not only relief from pain, but also empowerment. You, not your headaches, are in control of your life. This, in turn, can ease the sense of helplessness that can lead to despair and depression.
Following are some ways to recognize and manage some of the psychological issues pertaining to certain types of headaches:
Tension-Type Headache
It's widely believed that anxiety and stress can trigger tension-type headaches. For example, such headaches often are more pronounced in the afternoon and evening, when both stress and tension levels are higher. A combination of physical and psychological factors can provoke tension and stress. Say you're at work and have a project due by 5 p.m. You sit for hours in front of the computer screen, your muscles becoming tighter and your posture more rigid — a condition known as muscular bracing — as you concentrate on your work. By 4 p.m., you have a full-blown headache.
Learning how to interrupt muscular bracing can help you reduce or eliminate tension-type headache pain. One way to break the cycle is to practice relaxation techniques that focus on your facial and back muscles and to make sure you take frequent breaks from the computer. Set your watch alarm or computer timer to go off every 30 minutes and then get up, stretch and focus on relaxing tense muscles. On a daily basis, try practicing other stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, breathing exercises and self-hypnosis to help you take control over anxious and worrisome thoughts that can lead to stress and trigger tension-type headaches.
Migraine Headache
By their very nature, migraine headaches can cause major disruptions in your life — both physically and emotionally. They can occur anytime during the day or night, be aggravated by light, sound and smells and take days for the side effects to completely go away. No wonder, then, that many migraine headache sufferers feel depressed as well as disconnected from family, friends and co-workers. As with all types of headaches, migraines require an integrated approach to treatment that may include medications, physical therapy and relaxation techniques. In particular, self-hypnosis and EMG and thermal biofeedback may prove effective in reducing migraine headache symptoms. Along with abortive medications such as Imitrex that can halt migraine pain, finding ways to relax your body's autonomic or automatic nervous system is essential for long-term migraine headache control. Combining medication management with biofeedback and relaxation techniques has proven effective in the long-term control of headaches.
Cluster Headaches
The psychological dynamic of cluster headaches are much the same as that for migraines. Each of these extremely painful conditions can result in frustration, despair and depression. As with migraine headaches, an integrated approach to pain treatment that includes medications, relaxation techniques and physical therapy works best to manage cluster headache pain.
As a headache patient you can gain control over your life by learning as much as you can about the disorder and treatment options. Not only is this information personally empowering, it will enable you to inform others — including health-care providers and insurers — about the disorder. Approaching this condition from many angles — physically, psychologically and environmentally — is critical to effectively managing headaches.

Measuring Stress

One way to measure the amount of stress in your life is to examine the demanding events which have occurred to you recently. Look at it as a process and don't give up on yourself if you backslide. Awareness was a major factor for me. Because I grew up in a smoking household, it wasn't until my first attempt at quitting that I even realized how gross akes you smell! Although I started smoking again, I was much more conscious of other people's reactions to my foul habit. I became more considerate as well. In my early 30s I got serious about quitting due to health problems. My first long term success lasted two years, and I used a self-hypnosis tape. Again, increasing awareness was important. The tape made me realize the many cues I connected with my habit, such as finishing a meal, writing a letter, talking on the phone, etc. Although the tape did help me quit for a while, the hardest part was the extreme irritability and nastiness of the first few weeks. If you've ever quit smoking, you know what I'm talking about! It's as if you can't think of anything else for a while there. The bad news is that I did start smoking again. I made the choice at that point to not smoke in my home, which helped me smoke less and keep those cues disconnected, at least some of them. When I decided after a couple of years to quit again I went to an acupuncturist. What a miracle! Of course, I still had to exert my will power not to smoke, but the acupuncture completely erased the irritability and nastiness of those first weeks, so making that minute-by-minute choice became much easier. Acupuncture is based on the eastern belief that energy runs through the body in meridians or pathways associated with the various organs and systems. Acupuncturists insert fine needles into points along those meridians that affect the energy and thus the associated organ. The needles are so small that they seldom hurt unless the organ is in pretty bad shape. My acupuncturist used ear points; the ear has points for every meridian in the body. He needled points for my lungs, liver and one associated with addictions. The great thing about ear acupuncture is that he could tape small metal bb's to the points as well that continued to stimulate the organs. I kept these in place for about a week. I repeated this sequence a couple of times, and it really worked! I haven't smoked in 10+ years now, and I must say that acupuncture really made quitting much easier. If you live in or near a city with an acupuncture school, they often have clinics where you can get low-cost or free treatment. Check it out! Remember; don't get discouraged if you start again. It really is a process. The bottom line is to use what works for you. I found acupuncture to be a great adjunct to awareness and just plain old will power and would recommend it for anyone. Give it a shot! Acne is caused by stress.
Stress doesn't cause acne, but it can sometimes make acne worse. Stress can cause your glands to produce more oil, which can lead to a breakout.

Myth #2. Acne is caused by diet.
Extensive research has not found a connection between diet and acne. Food - even French fries, chocolate and pizza - doesn't cause acne. Eating greasy foods doesn't make your glands put out more oil.

Myth #3. Birth control pills can cause acne.
Sometimes, birth control pills can make acne worse in the first few months of taking them. But some birth control pills are even recommended to improve acne. Acne may get worse after the pill is stopped.

Myth #4. Acne is caused by poor hygiene.
Acne isn't caused by dirt or surface oil. It's caused by a process happening inside the body.

Myth #5. Tanning will help clear up acne.
Tanning does not help clear up acne. In fact, some acne treatments make your skin more sensitive to UV light. And tanning increases your risk of skin cancer. Avoid sunlamps and tanning booths, and use sun protection when you're outdoors.

Myth #6. Acne just has to run its course.
The truth is, acne can be cleared up. If over-the-counter products don't work, see your doctor. There are good treatments that can help you beat the zits and avoid scars.

The truth about acne
No one knows exactly what causes acne. But it has something to do with hormones. Acne usually develops when the body's production of hormones called androgens kick into high gear during the teenage years.

Androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands, which produce an oily substance called sebum. Too much sebum can block the openings of the glands and form a plug.

* If the plug stays below the skin's surface and is light in color, it's a whitehead.
* If the plug enlarges and pops out with a darkened tip, it's a blackhead.
* If it's red, swollen and pus-filled, it's a pimple.
* If the plugs are large, red and painful, they're called cysts (if they have pus) or nodules (if they're solid). Cystic or nodular acne is a severe type and is more likely to cause scarring.

Young men produce more androgen than girls. So, they are more likely than young women to have more severe, longer-lasting forms of acne .

Treating acne
The treatment for teenage acne depends on how severe it is. For mild acne, wash your face twice a day with a mild soap, and pat dry. Apply an over-the-counter acne cream that contains benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.

Many teens can manage their acne with over-the-counter treatments. But about four out of 10 teens get moderate to severe acne, which may need to be treated by a doctor.

For more severe acne, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics, birth control pills, corticosteroids or vitamin A derivatives (retinoids). One vitamin A derivative, Accutane (isotretinoin), is approved for treating severe acne when other treatments haven't helped. It's very effective, but it's used as a last resort because it has serious risks.

Good skin care is always important when you have acne.

* Wash your skin gently. Vigorous washing and scrubbing can irritate the skin and make acne worse.
* Do not squeeze or pop pimples. This could cause infection and scars.
* Use skin products labeled "noncomedogenic." This means they're less likely to clog your pores.
* Use acne treatments as directed, and be patient. It may take six to eight weeks to see results.

Kicking the Habit: How to Choose a Quit Date

Congratulations! You've decided to quit smoking. Now you just need to decide when. Many smoking cessation programs suggest that the first step to quitting is choosing a quit date. But how do you make that choice? Does when you quit have an impact on how successful you'll be?

If you're ready to make the commitment, here are some things to think about when choosing your quit date.

Choose to quit within the next several weeks. This will give you time to prepare yourself, but not enough time to change your mind.

1. Give yourself time to heal if you've experienced a recent loss or traumatic event. The grieving process is hard work. It can drain your energy and affect your ability to concentrate. The stress after a trauma or loss will likely increase your urge to smoke, too.
2. If you are facing a stressful event, such as marriage, buying a home or graduating from college, wait a while. Stress will probably make you want to smoke more often. And your focus is going to be on your big event, not on quitting. You are more likely to absently reach for a cigarette when your mind is somewhere else. The fewer distractions you have, the more likely you are to succeed.
3. When making your decision, try to pick a date that holds special meaning for you. Is there a day that holds unique meaning in your life? Would you like to link the day you quit to a special event? Some people choose a random date, but others prefer to pick a birthday, anniversary or some other special day. Others opt for a more symbolic choice, such as the Great American Smokeout, Independence Day or New Year's Day.
4. If you smoke at work, consider quitting on a weekend. When you return to your job on Monday, you'll already be enjoying the benefits of being smoke-free for two days.

Stay focused

Write your quit date on your calendar where you can see it every day. Don't come up with excuses to wait. Stay committed to your plan.

Choosing a plan

If you haven't done so already, work with your doctor to choose the smoking cessation plan that is best for you. You may decide to go cold turkey or use nicotine gum, the patch or some other option. Whatever you choose, take some time to prepare yourself mentally for the challenge ahead. The more prepared you feel, the better your chances will be of kicking butts for good.

MAKING THE TEXT LARGER ON A PAGE

I know many of us wish the text was larger on some web pages, to do this, hold the CTRL key down on your keyboard, and scroll the wheel in the middle of your mouse, down (or up). The finding is the first direct evidence that the brain's own pain-fighting chemicals, endorphins, have a role in the phenomenon known as the "placebo effect" - and that this response corresponds with a reduction in feelings of pain.

"This is telling us that placebos are powerful," said study lead author Dr Jon-Kar Zubieta, an associate professor of psychiatry and radiology at the University of Michigan. "When there is a belief that something may take place, this belief actually activates systems in your brain that are directly modifying experience. If you receive a drug and you believe it is active, the drug itself might not be doing very much."

The report appears in the August 24 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.
"We looked at the response of pain control systems in the brain," Zubieta said. "We observed that a placebo that was believed to be an agonistic agent was able to enhance the release of these anti-pain endogenous opioids."
For the study, Zubieta's team induced pain by injecting concentrated salt water solution into the jaws of 14 healthy young men who agreed to the experiment. The injections were given while the men underwent positron emission tomography (PET) scans.

During one scan, the men were told they would receive pain medicine. Instead, they were given a placebo. Then every 15 seconds during the subsequent scans, the men were asked to rate the intensity of their pain on a scale of 0 to 100. After the experiment, they provided more detailed pain ratings.
The researchers found that after telling the men that the placebo was coming, the amount of concentrated salt water needed to maintain the pain increased. This indicated that sensitivity to pain was reduced. So thinking they were getting a pain drug actually allowed the participants to tolerate more pain, the researchers said.Zubieta classified nine of the men as "high placebo responders" because they exhibited a strong placebo effect. The other five were classified as "low placebo responders." In addition, the researchers were able to show the power of the placebo effect. "There was more relief in response to this inactive medication as a function of belief," Zubieta said. "In fact, in some areas of the brain, the release was related to how much they believed the drug was going to be effective."
Zubieta believes these findings tell you something about how humans function. "Understanding these mind-body connections are important," he said. "There are many treatments that are believed to be effective, when in reality they may not be more effective than placebo."
Harnessing the placebo effect may have some positive therapeutic applications, Zubieta said. "You want to enhance the placebo effect under some circumstances," he said. "And in some others you want to reduce it - like when you do a clinical trial."
One expert thinks the findings are important, but miss the larger point.
"It's clearly another step in elucidating these mechanisms, which is really terrific," said Daniel E. Moerman, the William E. Stirton Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan in Dearborn, and the author of Meaning, Medicine and the Placebo Effect.
But he added, the question of a mind-body connection as a separation between the two "is not even 16th-century quality thinking," Moerman said. "Socrates did better than that."

"It's only the technology that has made this an interesting area to study," Moerman added. "You can scan this stuff now. You can see it, so there it is, and therefore it's sort of real."

Stone and Water are chatting under the tree.

<img style="display:block;
